ORNL BioMass Steam Plant

ORNL BioMass Steam Plant

Oak Ridge National Laboratory BioMass Steam Plant
Oak Ridge, TN

A 1947 boiler house was remodeled and expanded for conversion into a biomass gasification steam plant. The facility houses industrial shops, offices, toilet/shower areas, break rooms and visitor’s gallery, as well as a new material storage building.

The plant is part of ORNL’s commitment to renewable energy and replaces existing gas-fired boilers with new high-efficiency boilers fueled by wood chips. Boiler steam will be used campus-wide for building heating.
